When I decided I was going to cosplay Scout, I knew I wanted to build his Scattergun. Building this thing turned out to be the most challenging part of this cosplay, especially since I had never built a prop in my life.
I took an in-game model, scaled it, and then made a blueprint on my computer. I had an abundance of foam (y'know, the pink stuff?) left over from a Sculpture class project, so I used that for the large pieces like the grip and such. The foam was carved with a bandsaw, sealed, Bondo-ed, primed, & then painted. The barrels are 2" wide PVC pipe, with the board on top being basswood. The lever is foam that was covered in paperclay, and the tiny details & trigger are paperclay as well. Everything was assembled with Gorilla Glue Superglue (which works wonderfully, fyi).
This thing is massive. Even to [approximate] scale (the final product is a bit bigger then I thought...), it barely fits in my tiny babyman hands. Nevertheless, I love it. The Scattergun was my first big prop build, and despite some flaws, I'm really proud of the results. 8D
Can't wait to debut this costume at Connecticon this weekend!!! Time to bubblewrap this thing a ton so I can pack it...
